There is an alarming, scary trend happening in our country.

You see it on the evening news almost every other night.

One that leaves parents afraid every time their children board the bus for school. 

One that leaves administrators scratching their heads - wondering, "could this happen
to us?”

What we are talking about is an Active Shooter on school grounds.

This is the sign of the times.

Who would have ever thought it would come to this. But it has.

The trend is not going away, it's climbing.

Here are the stats...

10 years. 180 school shootings. 356 victims.

Yes, you read that correctly. In a 10 year span between 2009 and 2018, CNN documented180 school shootings that have resulted in 356 casualties. Of these 356 victims, 114 of them lost their lives. 2019 was no better as it averaged nearly one school shooting per week. This rising alarming trend does not appear to be slowing down. In fact, it’s just the opposite. More people have died or been injured in mass school shootings in the US in the past 18 years than in the entire 20th century. What is your school doing to prepare for this nightmare situation?

So what are our options?

We can continue to do the school lockdown drills.

If you’re a school administrator, you’ve probably talked to your staff and students. You’ve done your drills and worked with the local police department to plan for a variety of situations. But in an honest moment, how prepared is your school? Do your drills adequately prepare your staff and students for the unthinkable?

The truthful answer is that most plans and drills don’t do a good job prepping for such an event. They’ve become as routine and forgettable. Or worse, they’ve become so intense and realistic that participants leave traumatized. Odds are that your approach has a little bit of both. Does it stick?

We can bury our heads in the sand and HOPE it doesn't happen. But as you know, HOPE is never a strategy.
